McCormack tells Chris Searle he believes music is powerful and his place in the world is to use it for good.
ANDREW McCORMACK - GRAVITRON: The Calling
Jazz Views’ Eddie Myer writes, “McCormack is a formidable virtuoso, fully capable of integrating a range of influences from such challenging sources as Tigran Hamasyan and Steve Reich, and he’s written a set of closely plotted, twisting and turning pieces for his excellent band to negotiate.”

Andrew McCormack/Graviton: The Calling
UBU0025 / CD & Digital Formats
Release Date: 7th June 2019
Ubuntu Music is delighted to announce the signing of multi-talented pianist/composer/producer Andrew McCormack, to release Graviton: The Calling, the second album in the Graviton series.
Graviton is a formidable prog-jazz group led by McCormack, drawing on his wide range of influences that demonstrate his talents for composition as well as showcasing the band’s captivating performances. The music evades clear categorisation. However, the pianist always looks to push himself and his fellow musicians to find something new yet accessible.
Graviton: The Calling—Album Teaser Video
Scheduled for release in Summer 2019 on the fast-rising Ubuntu Music record label, Graviton’s second album, The Calling, follows the storyline of the classic "Hero’s Journey".
The group includes the forefront of the UK contemporary jazz scene with Noemi Nuti on vocals, Josh Arcoleo on tenor saxophone, Tom Herbert on electric bass and Josh Blackmore on drums.
"I've worked with Martin as my manager for nearly six years and I'm beyond thrilled to be able to release my music on his label and under our greater control”, said McCormack. “I've watched him build his team and grow Ubuntu Music from strength to strength over the last couple of years and I hope I can do my bit to help contribute to what is rapidly becoming one of the leading independent jazz labels on the scene."
Martin Hummel, Founder and Director of Ubuntu Music said, “Andrew and I have now worked together for some time, initially with me as his manager. The relationship has grown considerably and has delivered significant results. Ultimately, the logical extension was for Andrew to decide that the Ubuntu Music record label was the right place for his music. We are absolutely thrilled to embrace Andrew as a full member of the family and look forward to many more successful years together.”

Preface: This pastiche is decidedly biased, as it is written by someone in the business—as a manager, record label owner, agent and talent spotter—whose love for jazz exceeds all in his life, other than his love for his family. I’ve chosen to highlight my relationships with each artist/band, along with a sound bite performance rating, to protect the innocent. Otherwise, I’ll simply take the 5th Amendment.

Andrew McCormack’s Graviton
Pizza Express Soho (Sold Out)
The one a lot of people had been waiting for. Graviton is on a few lists for Album of The Year and Jazz FM’s Chris Philips chose the show as one to see. McCormack and crew (see Monday’s GSMD band listing) did not disappoint. A musical cross between Steve Reich and Tigran on acid, the band flew through a repertoire of high octane bliss. An all-star line-up and one to watch for 2018.
Relationship: Yes
Performance: Captivating

Andrew McCormack’s Graviton
Guildhall School of Music/Masterclass & Performance
This was a new one for me, as I’ve never attended a masterclass before and, if there was such a thing back in my day, I probably would have become a professional musician. Malcolm Edmonstone runs a tight ship and it was a joy to see the students interact with some serious names on the jazz scene, including Andrew McCormack/keys, Noemi Nuti/vocals, Josh Arcoleo/sax, Rob Mullarkey/bass and Josh Blackmore/drums. Imagine being a 19-year-old music student and be invited to play with this band. Magic.
